But as you prepare to spend the day with relatives and eccentric in-laws, it is worth getting in early to avoid being exhausted by Christmas Day.
Seafood markets are becoming increasingly popular as shoppers stay up extra late to grab prawns and oysters for a summer Christmas lunch. Major department stores Myer and David Jones are also opening until late for the cash register rush.
So which stores have extended their hours in the busy days leading up to Christmas? Sydney's Pitt Street Mall in the city is often very busy in the lead-up to Christmas.

From as early as the start of this month, Myer stores across Australia have extended their hours, with selected shops opening until 10pm. Meanwhile David Jones has followed suit with later closing times and on Friday, December 23 a majority of stores in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland will be open until midnight. Next week, its Sydney and Melbourne stores are staying open until 10pm, with almost every other store across Australia remaining open until 9pm on weeknights.
Westfield's flagship Pitt Street Mall is set to be crowded in the lead-up to Christmas. While electronic retailers Harvey Norman and JB-Hi Fi are expected to be busy, their hours will remain the same. Target and Kmart stores in inner-city Sydney and Melbourne are opening until midnight next week but will be closing at 10pm in suburban and regional areas. The discount stores are closing at 9pm in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, but are closing at 10pm in some parts of Tasmania.
Big W stores in NSW and Victoria are staying open until 10pm for most of next week, but are closing at 7pm in Queensland and 9pm in South Australia and Western Australia. It's the supermarkets that stay open a bit later for people to buy those turkeys and legs of ham. Woolworths and Coles supermarkets are opening from 6am until midnight on December 22 and December 23, before closing at 10pm on Christmas Eve. They are staying open until 10pm this week and next.
But Aldi is keeping its existing hours, with most stores open until 8pm from Monday to Wednesday. For those who want a better range of seafood, the Sydney Fish Market is expectingshoppers this year and will open for a marathon 36 hours of continuous trade, from 5am on December 23 to 5pm on Christmas Eve.
